Tips For Easily Caring For Your New Braces

If you are going to be wearing braces, you should learn as much as you can about what you can do to get used to them quickly and how to best deal with having them on. This article will provide you easy to follow tricks you can use to get through the braces wearing process with as little irritation and stress as possible.

Use the orthodontic wax

You should be provided with orthodontic wax after you have the braces put on. However, you will probably find that you will need to purchase more yourself. You can find the wax at most pharmacies and at some grocery stores.

The first thing you should do when you get home from having your braces put on is determine which parts of the braces you feel rubbing your mouth and immediately put the wax on the braces in those areas. By being proactive in this manner, you may be able to avoid the development of sores and irritated areas in your mouth.

To use the wax, you will take a small amount of it and roll it between your fingers until it becomes workable. Then, put it directly on the brackets of the braces and carefully push down. You don't want to push it too far onto the brackets or the sharp parts will simply come through the wax, defeating your efforts to protect your mouth.

Use a floss pick

When you get braces on, you'll more than likely find that using floss is even more difficult. It can get caught in the braces and even get torn by sharp pieces on them. However, you can purchase floss picks in the dental section of most grocery stores and in pharmacies.

Floss picks look almost like plastic toothpicks with a flared end that holds about an inch worth of dental floss. You will hold one end of the pick and easily work the floss end in and out of your teeth.

Carry a travel toothbrush and toothpaste with you

When you wear braces, you should brush after every meal. If you don't you can find that the food expands in the small areas of your braces. This can lead to bad breath quickly. It also puts you at a higher risk for plaque build-up, which increases your chances of developing cavities.

By carrying a small toothbrush and tube of toothpaste with you at all times, you can excuse yourself to brush your teeth when you are away from home and ensure you are taking good care of your teeth.
